  • Clothing with excessive wear

Clothing Donation Condition Requirements

Every clothing donation must be clean, dry, wearable and ready to be reused.

Before requesting a pickup, make sure your clothing is:

  • Freshly washed
  • Completely dry
  • Free from stains, mould and strong odours
  • Free from major tears or damage
  • Packed securely in bags or boxes
  • Protected from rain and outdoor exposure
  • Suitable for someone else to wear

Shoes must be clean and paired together.

New underwear, socks, hosiery and similar personal garments must remain unused and sealed in their original packaging.

Why Clothing Condition Matters

Our goal is to collect clothing that can be reused—not clothing that must be discarded.

Dirty, damaged or unusable clothing creates additional handling and disposal costs and takes space away from donations that can genuinely be given a second life.

Taking a few minutes to check and prepare your clothing helps pickups run more smoothly and ensures that more of what we collect remains in circulation.

How Much Clothing Is Needed for Pickup?

Our pickup service is designed for donations that reasonably justify sending a vehicle to your location.

A single small bag may not be enough on its own. Several bags or boxes of clothing are more likely to qualify, especially when combined with other accepted household donations.

When completing the pickup form, provide your best estimate of:

  • The number of garbage bags
  • The number of boxes
  • Any shoes, coats or accessories
  • Other eligible donation categories included

We will review the total estimated pickup size before confirming availability.

How to Prepare Clothes for Donation Pickup

Please prepare your clothing before your scheduled pickup.

  1. Wash and dry everything

All clothing should be clean, freshly washed and completely dry.

  1. Check the condition

Remove clothing that is heavily stained, torn, mouldy, damaged or no longer wearable.

  1. Empty all pockets

Check jackets, pants, handbags and other items for money, identification, keys, medication or personal belongings.

  1. Pair shoes together

Secure each pair together so that shoes do not become separated during collection and sorting.

  1. Pack clothing securely

Place clothing in strong, securely closed bags or boxes. Do not leave clothing loose.

  1. Separate damaged items

Do not mix unusable clothing with eligible donations.

  1. Keep everything protected

Store donations indoors, in a garage or in another dry location until pickup. If donations are being left outside, they must be protected from rain and weather.

For complete packing and staging instructions, review our how to prepare your donations page before pickup.

How Clothing Donation Pickup Works

Step 1: Submit Your Pickup Request

Complete our online pickup form and provide:

  • Your location
  • The approximate number of bags or boxes
  • The types of clothing or accessories included
  • Any other items you would like us to consider

Pictures are not always required for standard clothing donations, but an accurate quantity estimate helps us determine whether the pickup fits our available vehicle space.

Step 2: Wait for Confirmation

Your request is not automatically booked when the form is submitted.

We will review the request, confirm that your location is within our active service area and contact you by email regarding availability and scheduling.

Step 3: Prepare Your Donations

Wash, inspect, bag and stage your clothing according to the preparation instructions above.

Step 4: We Collect Your Clothing

Once your pickup has been confirmed, place the donations in the agreed collection location so they are accessible when the pickup team arrives.

How Your Clothing Donations Help

Donating reusable clothing does more than clear space in your home.

It helps:

  • Extend the useful life of clothing and accessories
  • Keep reusable textiles out of landfills
  • Provide affordable clothing through the Thrift Society reuse network
  • Create local work connected to pickup, sorting and processing
  • Support the growth of our Family Relief Program
  • Build a stronger culture of reuse in Canadian communities

The greatest impact comes from clothing that is clean, wearable and ready to be reused.

Why Choose Clothing Pickup Instead of Donation Bins?

Clothing donation bins can work for small donations, but they are not always the easiest option.

When you request clothing donation pickup, you can:

  • Avoid loading bags into your vehicle
  • Avoid driving to a donation centre
  • Stop searching for clothing donation bins near you
  • Avoid arriving to find that a bin is full
  • Keep donations protected from outdoor weather
  • Donate several bags or boxes at once
  • Arrange collection directly from your property

For anyone clearing multiple closets, moving, downsizing or donating a larger amount of clothing, scheduled pickup can be far more convenient than using a clothing donation bin.
