Free Donation Pickups for Books & Learning Materials
DonateYourStuff.ca provides free scheduled donation pickup for qualifying books and learning materials across the GTA and select surrounding communities. We accept fiction and non-fiction books, children’s books, textbooks, comics, magazines and older or collectible books.
Books and printed materials should be clean and in good readable condition, with their covers and pages intact.
Submit a pickup request with your location, the approximate number of books or boxes and a general description of what you have. We will review your request and contact you by email about pickup availability.
Book Donations We Accept
Book donations can include individual titles, complete series, matching sets, magazine collections and different types of educational or reference material. Some books stand on their own, while others should remain with the rest of their set or collection.
The sections below explain the types of books and printed materials we accept and the important details to check before adding them to your pickup request.
Why Condition Matters
Books and printed materials can remain useful for many years, but certain types of damage can make them impossible to reuse.
Moisture, mould and contamination are especially important because they can damage surrounding books and create problems during pickup, sorting and storage. Books that are falling apart or missing large sections may also no longer function as complete reading material.
Normal age, page colouring and light shelf wear are different from serious damage. An older book can still be perfectly usable even when it shows signs of age.
Checking your books before donating helps make sure more of what we collect can stay in circulation instead of being discarded after pickup.
We reserve the right to decline books and printed materials that are unsafe to handle or too damaged to be reused.

Do not discard a book simply because it is old.
Age, page colouring, older printing styles, inscriptions or dated cover designs may be expected and do not automatically make a book unsuitable.

Books We Cannot Accept
We cannot accept books, magazines or learning materials that are unsafe to handle or too damaged to be reused.
Please do not donate:
- Books or magazines with active mould or mildew
- Wet or damp materials
- Materials with serious water damage
- Items with active pest contamination
- Pages that are stuck together
- Books with large sections missing
- Magazines with most pages removed
- Items contaminated by chemicals, bodily fluids or unsafe substances
- Materials with severe smoke, sewage or other strong contamination
- Books that are disintegrating and unsafe to handle
- Completely used workbooks with no reusable material remaining
- Learning sets missing most of their important pieces
- Books packed in wet, damaged or collapsing boxes
- Boxes that are too heavy to lift safely
- Loose books or magazines left exposed to weather
- Items that have not been prepared for pickup
Items that do not meet our donation standards may be declined at pickup.
How Many Books Are Needed for Pickup?
Our pickup service is intended for donations that reasonably justify sending a vehicle to your location.
One or two books may not be enough on their own. Several manageable boxes, a book collection or a mixed donation containing books and other accepted items is more likely to qualify.
When completing the pickup form, provide your best estimate of:
- The total number of boxes
- The approximate number of books
- The number of magazines or magazine boxes
- The main subjects or types included
- Whether the donation includes vintage or collectible materials
- Whether any books are oversized or unusually heavy
- Whether the donation includes a complete collection
- Any other eligible donation categories included
Do not pack books into oversized boxes. Books become heavy very quickly, and boxes must remain safe for one person to lift.
We will review the total quantity, box size, condition, available vehicle space and route availability before confirming a pickup.
How to Prepare Your Books for Your Donation Pickup
Please prepare your books, magazines and learning materials before your scheduled pickup.
Inspect for Moisture and Mould
Check books and magazines for dampness, active mould, mildew and serious water damage.
Do not place wet or mouldy items in the same box as reusable materials.
Do Not Remove Older Items Because of Age
Do not discard books, textbooks, comics or magazines simply because they are old.
Vintage, antique, historical and collectible materials may still have value even when the subject matter or design is no longer current.
Keep Collections Together
Keep related materials together whenever possible, including:
- Book series
- Matching sets
- Magazine runs
- Comic collections
- Educational sets
- Multi-volume reference books
- Author collections
- Vintage collections
Place loose pieces, indexes, inserts or companion materials in the same box.
Use Strong, Manageable Boxes
Pack books and magazines in sturdy cardboard or plastic boxes with secure bottoms.
Use smaller boxes instead of oversized moving boxes. A large box filled with books can become too heavy to lift safely.
Do not use weak, wet, torn or collapsing boxes.
Do Not Overpack Boxes
Each box should be manageable for one person to lift.
Leave enough room to close the box properly. Do not stack books above the top or pack them so tightly that the box begins to split.
Pack Materials Carefully
Place books flat or upright with their spines supported.
Lay magazines flat or keep them upright with enough support to prevent folding.
Do not place heavy books on top of fragile magazines, comics or older paper materials.
Protect Older and Collectible Materials
Place fragile, antique or collectible books and magazines in clean, dry boxes.
Use paper, cardboard dividers or other clean packing material to prevent unnecessary movement.
Do not use wet newspaper, dirty fabric or materials that may transfer moisture or stains.
Label the Boxes
When possible, label boxes containing:
- Children’s books
- Textbooks
- Comics and graphic novels
- Magazines
- Vintage or collectible materials
- Art and photography books
- Workbooks and learning materials
- Fragile books
Clear labels help us understand the donation and keep related materials together.
Keep Everything Dry
Store packed materials indoors, in a dry garage or in another protected location until pickup.
Do not leave books or magazines exposed to rain, snow, damp ground or outdoor humidity.
If an approved pickup is being left outside, every box must be fully closed, covered and protected from weather.
Separate Unusable Materials
Do not mix actively mouldy, wet, contaminated or pest-affected materials with the rest of the donation.

How Book Donation Pickup Works
Step 1: Submit Your Pickup Request
Complete the online form and provide your location, estimated number of boxes, types of books or magazines and any important access information.
Mention any large collections, vintage materials, collectible items, oversized books or other donation categories.
Step 2: We Review Your Donation
We review:
- Your service location
- The number of boxes
- The types of materials included
- The overall condition
- Box size and estimated weight
- Whether other donation categories are included
- Available vehicle space
- Current route availability
We may contact you by email if more information or photos are needed.
Step 3: Receive Email Confirmation
Your pickup is only scheduled after you receive confirmation by email.
Preferred dates and times submitted through the form are requests and are not automatically secured.
Step 4: Pack Your Donation
Inspect and pack the materials in strong, manageable boxes.
Move all approved donations to the agreed ground-level pickup location. Make sure the boxes are visible and clearly separated from anything that should not be collected.
Step 5: We Collect the Approved Items
Once your pickup is confirmed, our team will collect the approved books, magazines and learning materials from the agreed location.
Items that are wet, actively mouldy, contaminated, unsafe to lift or significantly different from what was described may be declined.

Have several boxes of books, magazines or learning materials ready to donate?
Submit a pickup request with your location, estimated number of boxes and a general description of what is included. Tell us if the donation contains vintage books, collectible magazines, textbooks, comics or a larger collection.
We will review your request and contact you by email regarding availability.
Once approved, pack everything securely and place the boxes in the confirmed ground-level pickup location. We handle the collection so you do not have to carry heavy boxes to a donation centre.

Is book donation pickup free?
There is no charge for an approved pickup.
Requests are subject to location, route availability, donation volume, box size, weight and overall condition.
What types of books do you accept?
We accept many qualifying fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, cookbooks, textbooks, comics, graphic novels, workbooks, reference books, art books, vintage books and other learning materials.
Books may be modern, older, vintage, antique or collectible.
Do books need to be new or recently published?
No.
Books do not need to be new, recently published or from a current edition simply to qualify.
Older books may have reading, historical, reference, decorative or collectible value. Age alone is not a rejection reason.
Do you accept old, vintage or antique books?
Yes.
We accept qualifying older, vintage and antique books, including first editions, signed books, older sets, out-of-print books and historical materials.
They must be dry, safe to handle and free from active mould or serious contamination.
Do you accept old textbooks?
Yes.
Older textbooks may have academic, historical, reference or collectible value.
We do not reject textbooks simply because a newer edition exists. Include the subject, edition and approximate quantity in your pickup request when possible.
Do you accept magazines?
Yes.
We accept qualifying modern, older, vintage and collectible magazines and periodicals.
Magazines do not have to be new or current. They should be dry, safe to handle and complete enough to remain useful or collectible.
Do you accept vintage magazines?
Yes.
Vintage magazines, special editions, older advertising magazines, hobby publications and magazine collections may have historical or collector value.
Do not discard magazines simply because they are old.
Do you accept incomplete magazine collections?
Yes, partial collections and individual issues may still qualify.
The individual magazines should be reasonably complete and free from active mould, serious water damage or contamination.
Do you accept comics and graphic novels?
Yes.
We accept individual comics, graphic novels, manga, collected editions, older issues and comic collections.
Partial series may still qualify.
Do you accept children’s books?
Yes.
We accept children’s storybooks, picture books, chapter books, young adult books, educational books and older children’s book collections.
Normal reading wear does not automatically disqualify a book.
Can I donate workbooks that have writing in them?
Possibly.
Partially completed workbooks may still qualify when enough usable material remains. Completely used workbooks with no practical reuse value may be declined.
Can I donate mouldy or water-damaged books?
We cannot accept books or magazines with active mould, serious moisture damage or contamination that may spread to other materials.
Age-related page colouring or normal vintage wear is not the same as mould or active water damage.
How many books do I need for pickup?
One or two books will usually not be enough on their own.
Several manageable boxes, a larger collection or a mixed donation containing other accepted items is more likely to qualify.
How should I pack books and magazines?
Pack them in sturdy, securely closed boxes that one person can lift safely.
Use smaller boxes for books and protect magazines, comics and older paper materials from bending and moisture.
Can I combine books with other donations?
Yes.
Books and magazines can be combined with clean clothing, household items, toys, electronics and other accepted donation categories.
List all categories and estimated quantities when submitting your request.
Do I need to be home for pickup?
Not always.
Once your pickup has been confirmed, you may be able to leave the boxes in an agreed, visible, ground-level location.
Everything must be clearly identified and fully protected from weather.
Can you carry boxes out of my basement or upstairs?
No. Books and other donations must be packed and moved to an accessible ground-level pickup location before the scheduled collection.
Does submitting the form confirm my pickup?
No.
The form submits a pickup request only. Your pickup is confirmed after the details have been reviewed and scheduling confirmation has been sent by email.
